![]() ![]() Bros could have all the external trappings of a classic gentleman, and still lack what we young folk didn’t yet want-maturity, responsibility, or any sense of obligation to anyone else. After all, bros wore suits now! Bros had good taste in scotch. Barney, in the midst of that linguistic sea change, made it all okay. We poked fun at the shirtless, tasteless guys we deemed to be "bros," even as we started to use it on each other. No less than the Oord English Dictionary called Stinson out as "the quintessence of a certain iteration of the contemporary bro." By the latter half of the 2000s, broiness was an inescapable part of our culture. How I Met Your Mother premiered in 2005, and the next few years saw Don’t tase me bro," the rise of the portmanbro, and countless other infiltrations of the word into the vocabulary of everyday men, even ones with little love for stretch Hummers. The term, as it has proliferated since, simply didn’t exist. In September of 2004, GQ did a feature on the conspicuous-spending, beer-pounding, Vegas-hopping young male of the day, which we termed the "American Jackass." The word "bro" was used a grand total of once. ![]() Many of us thumbed our noses at his crass, womanizing hijinks many of us were kidding ourselves.Īnd while Barney high-fived through his epic life, we bro-ed out along with him. In the same way that Kevin James and his sitcom ilk are wish-fulfillment for average-looking middle-age guys, with their wiseacre beer buddies and endlessly forgiving, smoking-hot wives, Barney was the same for young, urban males-the partying man-boy turned superhero. Let’s eulogize him here for a second: Barney wasn’t just a fun-loving dude-bro but the supernatural epitome of one, especially the parts that we all, in some way, wanted to be ourselves: irresistible to women, impervious to harm or hangover, unable, even, to take a bad photograph. Well, that or the Entourage crew, which, Christ. Sure, it sounds hyperbolic and a more than a little horrifying, but I can attest to this: For the cash-strapped, sex-starved college-age guys of the mid-2000s, there was no better-known or more enviable character than Barney. ![]() Neil Patrick Harris’s character was, like it or not, a seminal figure of sorts, the sitcom representation of who we all were right then, or who we wanted to become. For those of us who were suckered into watching that awful show for nine years, Barney was always How I Met Your Mother’s bright spot. The first 3 books had kind of similar trajectories and in closings so they are most likely ramping up some storylines to be antagonists, moving some antagonists up slightly in the timeline and doing some other-things to not give too much away too soon in regards to certain story elements (those are just my opinions from having followed the production fairly closely over the last couple years). It is actually going to start off with Season 1 being very different in a lot of ways for various production reasons. Neil Patrick Harris: television's first 'straight' character, Gawker, January 12.
